The Society was founded June 22, 1976 as
The Society for the Restoration of the Dr.
Samuel A. Mudd Home. The home was placed
on the Register of Historical Places,
Oct. 1, 1974. The property was deeded to
the Society by the Maryland Historical
Trust, March 3, 1983. On March 26, 1981
the name was changed to the Dr. Samuel A.
Mudd Society, Inc.
The Society is dedicated to the preservation
and interpretation of the historic Dr.
Samuel A. Mudd Home. The Society
encourages research into the role that
this historic site played at the time of
the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
Revenue from members and visitors is contributed
toward preserving the house and grounds.
The history of the house, its furnishings, and
the Mudd family, is proved by volunteer
docents who conduct the tours. Other items of interest can be found in the exhibit building.
In the gift shop visitors will find books containing historical information during this period
of American History.
